Create participant types for each speaker role

Define the roles speakers play in your program, such as Author, Primary Speaker, or Moderator.

Written by Zack Schwartz

Participant types are the roles people play in your program. A single session might have one primary speaker, several authors, and a moderator, each with different responsibilities. Defining these roles lets you:

  • Add people to a submission in a specific role.

  • Assign tasks only to the roles that need them.

  • Show or hide profile fields by role.

The same person can hold multiple roles. For example, they might be a primary speaker on one session and a moderator on another.

Review the built-in types

In Participant Settings, click the Participant Types tab. If you allowed applicants and session chairs to be participants, the Applicant and Session Chair types are already listed. These built-in types can be edited but not deleted.

Click Select on any type to open it. The Row Template tab controls how each person in that role is displayed in lists. Click Insert Variable to add details such as the participant's first and last name, then click Save.

Add a participant type

Click Add Participant Type. Enter a Code (a short internal identifier) and a Name (what users will see), then click Save.

Repeat for each role in your program. In this example, we've added Author, Moderator, and Primary Speaker.

Next Steps

If some profile fields only apply to certain roles, set up participant type groups. See Show or hide speaker profile fields by participant type. Otherwise, skip ahead to Create speaker tasks.
